Club Meeting – November 14th, 2013
Today our program was presented by Charles “Chuck” Van Allman, Jr., City Engineer for the City of Salem, on the topic of “EPA Storm Water Demands on Local Governments”. Surprising, to many of us, this affects all property owners in the City of Salem not just institutional and commercial property owners.
What is storm water run-off?… Storm water run-off is the water that flows off roofs, driveways, parking lots, streets, and other hard surfaces during rain storms. Rather then being absorbed into the ground the water runs through ditches and storm drains into the River. It does not receive treatment before entering the River.
We learned the three focus areas of the Virginia Storm Water Management Program (VSMP).
- Small Construction Permits.
- Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4).
- Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) for TMDLs (Total Maximum Daily Load) upper Roanoke River Basin.
